\u201cWe should all be feminists!\u201d (Chima\u00admanda Ngozi Adichie)\u2014In Europe and the United States, feminism has long since become part of popular culture. Yet, despite global movements, demons\u00adtra\u00adtions, and petitions to establish equality, it is still not possible in the twenty-first century to speak of compre\u00adhen\u00adsive gender equality with regard to women and LGBTQIA+ communities\u2014not in any country of the world. In many places, struc\u00adtural relati\u00adons\u00adhips of power and inequa\u00adlity prevent equal pay or the remune\u00adra\u00adtion of domestic work and ensure oppres\u00adsion and explo\u00adita\u00adtion up to physical violence or even murder. Countless artists worldwide react to such untenable condi\u00adtions, as well as to other global challenges, with their feminist-oriented artworks. Activistic, provo\u00adca\u00adtive, and direct, but also poetic, humorous, and subtle, these artists strive to achieve equal and forward-looking living condi\u00adtions for themselves, other margi\u00adna\u00adlized people, and society as a whole.<\/p>\n

With 44 texts and inter\u00adviews by scholars, artists, and curators from across the globe, this publi\u00adca\u00adtion provides insight into the diversity of feminist theories and practices in the field of art, as well as in the most diverse areas of life and work. Like no other publi\u00adca\u00adtion before it, Empower\u00adment: Art and Feminisms<\/em> offers a compact overview of cultural, political, and artistic develo\u00adp\u00adments of the recent past and the present. The planetary approach under\u00adlying the publi\u00adca\u00adtion offers various ways of thinking about feminist futures.<\/p>\n

This English book is published to comple\u00adment the German-language publi\u00adca\u00adtion Empower\u00adment. Kunst und Feminismen<\/em> (Art and Feminisms), which has been produced in coope\u00adra\u00adtion with the Federal Agency for Civic Education (available for \u20ac7 in the museum shop, at unstmuseum.de\/shop, or at bpb.de (plus postage).<\/p>\n
